Terry Montague Sauriol paints beyond the subject. She is especially attentive to the lighting surrounding her subjects and the shadows cast by them “I like to take seemingly everyday objects or settings and make them as interesting as I see them by painting the colors, the lighting, and the shadows rather than merely the subject.” She also enjoys painting horses and seeing them as large objects with interesting forms and shapes.

A graduate of Washington State University, Sauriol is both classically trained as a painter and an educator herself. She taught art to high school students for a number of years before turning her energies to her own studio work. As a result of her influence and tutelage, many of her students have pursued careers in the visual arts.

During the summer of 1998, Sauriol left Portland, Oregon to move east of the Cascade Mountains. Sauriol’s expansive new environment has influenced her awareness of the light in her area and embraces the rich colors of her region.

Terry Montague Sauriol has shown in galleries throughout the Northwest, including Broderick Gallery, Portland, Oregon; Gallery OSCAR in Ketchum (Sun Valley), Idaho; and Brown’s Gallery in Boise, Idaho. She is now showing at First Avenue Contemporary Gallery in Ketchum (Sun Valley), Idaho. Her work is found in several private collections, both regionally and abroad.
